Did you know that grand prize on America's Got Talent is spread out over 40 years?

The winner of last year's million dollar prize on America's Got Talent was 13 years old, which is a pretty good thing, because at least she'll get a chance to spend it while she's relatively young. That's because the prize is spread out over 40 years, which works out to be about $25,000 per year. So the 13 year old winner will be 53 by the time she's received her last payment.

That's just plain bizarre, especially when you consider all the hype around the prize itself, and the seemingly unlimited budget they spend on just about everything else on the show. Honest Talk Show Product Placement

It's hard to take news shows seriously, when the hosts shamelessly promote handbags.

There's a fine line between news, information, and commercial endorsements, and morning talk shows cross it every single day. How are we supposed to take hosts like Matt Lauer seriously when he just spent 7 minutes talking about makeup and handbag "Steals and Deals"?

Look, I realize TV is a business, and they need to make money, but I don't think a news and information show should be endorsing products without fully disclosing that they're being paid to make the endorsement. Current FCC regulations require them to make some sort of disclosure, but most people never see them because they zoom by in the credits at the end.

Reality TV Shouldn't Feature Illegal Activity

Reality TV needs a reality check.

I recently saw a "Reality TV" show that follows the ins and outs of a bunch of back woods Moonshiners. I don't know much about the show, but it seemed to me that entire premise of the show was that these guys were running an illegal still in the middle of the woods so that they could avoid being caught by the police. Even if they "faked" the whole thing, isn't it still wrong?

No matter how you slice it, the whole thing is wrong. If they weren't actually making illegal Moonshine, it was fake and they were deceiving the audience. If it was real, everyone involved, including the cast and their entire crew were breaking the law. Either way, they were glorifying criminal activity.

Talk shows can get repetitive. Here's how to fix that.

When I think of talk shows, one thing comes to mind, interviews between a host and A-List celebrities. Most of the time, the host starts out as a B-List celebrity.

You never see talk shows start off with a well known A-List celebrity, which makes sense, because most A-List celebrities would never commit to a long term contract doing a daily show.

That said, I think it would be pretty easy getting an A-List celebrity to commit to doing just one show a week... for a couple of months. That's the essence of today's idea. New Star Trek Discovery on CBS? Not Quite

Star Trek is coming back to TV. Unfortunately, it'll cost you $10 per month to see it.

I've been a Star Trek fan since the early 70s, so I was super excited to hear there was a new series in the works. The series will be called "Star Trek Discovery" and it takes place about 10 years before the timeline of the original 1960s series.

It's been a while since Star Trek was on TV, so I was looking forward to the new series until I heard that you need to subscribe to their CBS All-Access service to see it. For what it's worth, I don't mind paying a monthly fee for streaming services. I already pay for Amazon Prime and Netflix, but this is different. TV Remotes should have Radio Buttons to jump directly to your favorite channels.

It's impossible to keep track of all your favorite TV channels these days because there are literally thousands of channels. Wouldn't it be great if you could assign each of your favorite channels to a simple one-button "Radio Button", just like in your car?

Setting it up would be just like on your car radio. First, you go to your channel the old fashioned way, then hold down one of your favorites button until it locks it in. After that, a quick tap will take you directly to the same channel.

Why isn't there at least one network for philanthropy?

Cable TV has hundreds of network in dozen's of categories, such as sports, movies, politics, and children's programming, yet with all that variety, I've never seen a channel devoted to philanthropy.

Anyone who's ever seen the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon knows exactly how powerful TV can be for raising money or awareness for a charity. The MDA Telethon brought attention and much needed funding to an otherwise obscure disease by combining entertainment, information and emotion.

TV Networks Shouldn't Show Tiny Movie Credits at 90 MPH

What's the point of showing movie credits if you can't read them?

We get it. Networks don't expect anyone to have the patience to sit through 8 minutes of boring credits, so they will do anything they can to avoid showing them, and moving on to the next program. The most common technique is to shrink the credits to a tiny box on the bottom of the screen and play them at 90 miles per hour.

At that size and speed, there is absolutely no chance anyone can read them.

Personally, I think they should show the all the original credits, just as they were when they were originally created. Not only does this give each of the people who worked on the movie or show the credit they deserve, but it also gives the audience a chance to take a break, and even enjoy the music.

Why Star Wars Should Be on Regular TV More Often

Believe it or not, some people have never seen Star Wars.

I take it for granted that everyone's seen Star Wars, but the fact is, some people haven't seen it, and there's a good reason. It's rarely on TV, and they may not be the kind of people who invest in buying DVDs or BluRay Discs, especially for movies they've never seen before.

Think about it. If you didn't see the original when it was in theaters in 1977, there were very few chances to see it unless you were willing to purchase a copy.

Since some people rarely purchase movies, that means they probably haven't seen it. That's a shame.

Zombies are cool. Talking Zombies would be even better.

There have been countless movies and TV shows featuring zombies, but what you never see are talking zombies. It's been that way since the 60s, when Night Of The Living Dead, the first major zombie movie was released.

Ever since then just about every zombie movie has followed the same basic formula. Dead people wake up, and start walking around looking for people to eat. Most of them walk very slowly, and for the most part, they dress alike. Apparently being dead also means your clothing should have lots of holes in them. For those who were dead for years, I could understand that, but most zombies are the recently dead, so they should look pretty well dressed, but I digress.

Remove The Video Time Delay From Sports on TV

Sports on TV isn't really live.

There's something special about seeing a sporting event as it actually happens. The funny thing is when you watch an event on TV, it's actually delayed about 10-30 seconds, so if you were on the phone with someone who was actually at the game, they can tell you what's going to happen before you see it on TV.

The primary reason for the delay is to give the broadcasters an opportunity to censor out any offensive language before it hits the airwaves. That few extra seconds makes a big difference when a sportscaster gets overly excited and accidentally curses on the air.

It's been a long time since ABC's American Bandstand went off the air. For many people it was more than just a weekly dance show featuring the latest music of the day, it was a snapshot of American culture in a neat little package.

If you wanted a snapshot of the latest music, dance, fashion, hairstyles, makeup and language of each generation, you didn't need to look any further than Bandstand to see it. Every week, the studio was packed with young people decked out in their trendiest outfits ready to dance to the latest music.

Universal Volume Settings

Have you ever noticed that the volume numbers on TVs mean absolutely nothing?

I find it funny that most TVs today show a number on the screen when you adjust the volume, but the number itself is meaningless.

Let's say your current TV is set at 25, and you buy a new TV and set it at 25... will the volume be the same? Probably not. In fact, even on the same TV, if you measured the sound on two different channels, the volume could be dramatically different. Not only that, even on the same channel, on the same TV the volume in the commercials will be much higher than the show you were watching. That's pretty stupid.

Why don't TV remotes have "Radio Buttons" to let you jump to your favorites?

From the earliest days or car radios, the most popular feature has been the six buttons that let you jump directly to your favorite stations. It was particularly important in car radios because drivers can't take their eyes off the road for more than a second.

With these six buttons, drivers don't even need to know the actual station numbers. All they need to do is hit button #2 and it jumps directly to what they're looking for. After a while, some drivers only listen to the stations in their presets so it's become important enough for some stations to remind listeners to save their station in the presets.

Let's face it. Just about everyone misplaces their remote from time to time. One minute you're holding it in your hand, the next minute you reach for it and it's not there. Perhaps your phone rang, and you took it with you to another room. Or you left it on the kitchen table when you stopped for a snack. Or even left it in the bathroom. Either way, it's a pain in the neck finding the thing.

Do we really need reality TV shows that feature illegal activity?

I saw a show on the Discovery Channel about Moonshining that features a disclaimer telling you it's illegal. Most of the show centers around the ins and outs of hiding their operations from the police. One segment focused on looking for a new place to hide their still, and other segments were about delivering their product to customers without getting caught.

Because of the popularity of the show, the Moonshiners eventually built a "Legitimate" version of their product, but it bothers me that they focus so much of the show on hiding from the law.

Isn't technology supposed to make things easier?

When I was young, a TV had two basic dials. One turned it on and adjusted the volume, and the other changed the channel. Technically, there was a third dial, the UHF dial, but nobody used it. It had nothing but static.

Years later, as cable TV, DVD and Blu-Ray discs, gaming consoles, and home theaters came along things started to get complicated. It's not just an issue of a plugging in a couple of new wires and remotes. For many people, their TV is so complicated they need to hire a professional installer to help them plug everything in, and explain how to use it.

Why do TVs still need a wired connection?

Before cable TV came along, every TV in the world got it's signal from giant broadcasting towers that were many miles away. The picture was pretty crude by today's standards, but it worked.

Now that cable TV has become mainstream, isn't it strange that our TVs have wired connections? Think about it. We used to get a TV signal from over 30 miles away, but cable boxes don't have the ability to send a picture to a TV located 3 feet away?

Here's a movie I'd love to see...

If you grew up in the 70s, you will remember Welcome Back Kotter. It was a huge hit, and it launched John Travolta's career.

The premise was simple. Gabe Kaplan plays a schoolteacher named Gabe Kotter, who was a founding member of a gang of misbehaving students called the "Sweathogs". The Sweathogs were a group of out of control kids who weren't expected to graduate. Kotter returns to his old high school as a teacher and he's assigned to a new generation of Sweathogs, including Vinny Barbarino, played by John Travolta.

According to a recent study, The Average American pays over $90 per month for 172 channels that they don't watch.. Some pay even more, and they still don't watch most of the channels they pay for. What a waste of money.

Why not create a daily show that's actually different each day?

A daily talk show that has a different host for each day of the week would be revolutionary. The show would run the same time every night, from the same set, and on the same network. While it would still be the same show, the diversity of the hosts would make each night entirely different, with it's own distinct energy and atmosphere.

Not only does it give the audience a break from the same host every single day, it gives the host an entire week to prepare for their next show.

It also has the potential to bring more diverse guests, because hosts tend to book guests that fit their unique personality, including a lot of the people they've worked with in the past.

On-demand services are wonderful, but schedule programming is an EVENT.

I realize that the whole point of Netflix is that the entire service is on-demand, so you can watch whatever you want, whenever you want. That's all fine and dandy, but I think they should have scheduled programming too.

When I was in grade school, Tuesdays were special; that's when Happy Days came on. The next day, everyone in class talked about it. Although none of us watched it together, Tuesdays at 8m belonged to us. It was an event we all shared together.

Why have TVs become so complicated?

Ever since the late 70s, people have come to me with their technical problems. One odd trend that I've noticed is that people are finding it harder and harder to use their TVs. Instead of asking me to solve complex computer issues, I'm often asked to help people figure out how to get their TV systems to work.

Back in the old days, TVs weren't that complicated. You plugged in an antenna, and simply turned it on. Once VCRs, surround sound, video games, cable, and satellite TV came along, things started to get complicated. Getting them all to work is a complete mess.

At the root of the mess is that TVs have become more like a monitor without a tuner. Almost everything plugs in using HDMI jacks, and comes with it's own remote control.

Have you ever attended a book reading? It's magical.

I have to admit it. When I was young, I didn't like books. I dreaded every book I was assigned to read, and I didn't read many books on my own. However, I loved when my teachers read to the class.

In grammar school, back in the 70s, one of my teachers read a chapter a day from books like "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "The Hobbit". After each chapter, there was a collective sigh as each of us hoped she would continue reading, so we wouldn't have to wait until the next day for more.

Let's face it, cat videos are addictive. Although some people won't admit it, millions of people watch them every day.

Cat videos are pretty unique. While some people spend a lot of time and money on high end cameras, lighting, and other effects to create a video that goes viral, anyone with a cat can get millions of views by using their cell phone to record their cat coughing up a hairball. That's incredible.

TV Remote Controls Suck

Why are TV remotes so bad?

Technology today moves at an incredible pace, but somehow TV remotes are just as bad as they were over 30 years ago. In fact, I'd say they are worse.

Where do I start?

1. Most of them still use Infra-Red, which means they only work when you point them directly at the TV or cable box. Depending on where the sensor is, you often have to hold it in awkward positions. A modern remote should use BlueTooth or WiFi.

2. There are WAY too many buttons. I don't know about you, but that means I hit the wrong one way too often. Take a lesson from Apple. With an iPod, you can pick a song from a list of thousands with just a dial or wheel, so why not consider an alternate to all those buttons.

How did we get to the point where we pay for commercial TV?

This one boggles my mind. Back in the old days, TV was free. It was pretty simple. The networks made millions off the commercials, so there was no reason to charge people to watch. The only exception was a small percentage of people in remote areas who paid a small fee for cable TV, because they were too far to get regular over the air reception.

It also made sense when HBO introduced the first premium subscription commercial free channel. Without commercials, it was perfectly clear why they charged for the service. Very simple to understand.

Somehow we've reached a point where the typical cable TV bill is over $100, and nearly every channel has commercials.
