On-Screen Volume Should Always Show a NUMBER.

How loud is that? I don't know, I'd say about 6 or 7 squares.
There's a certain comfort knowing exactly how loud the volume on your gadgets are set at. If you leave the room and somebody changes the settings, with a quick touch of the button, you can set it just the way you like it, unless on-screen display is just a bar-graph, making it more of a guess.
Think of the "Sleep Number Bed". Before it was sold by that name, it was called the "Select Comfort Bed". It had a remote that could change how firm the air was, but it didn't have a number. Once they added the number, it became a huge hit, because people eventually found their favorite number and from that point on, they might change the setting from time to time, but their number was the reference point... a couple of points up or down from their favorite.
To me, volume settings that only have a number are too arbitrary.
Some of them have exactly ten boxes. Okay, sounds easy enough. If it looks like 5 boxes, that's 50%, what could be wrong with that? First of all, I think there should be more than ten boxes. With just ten boxes, that means each box up or down moves the volume by 10%. That's way too much of a change for each click. If you increase the number of boxes to 20, that means each box is 5%, which is better, but then we are back to the same problem of trying to figure out how many boxes is our preferred setting.
Back in the analog days, there were not only numbers, but lots of space between the numbers. So there was a lot of variance between 4 and 5. One thing I can tell you. If it's playing my favorite Nigel Tufnel songs. Mine will be set to 11.
