Visual Harmony. The Key To Effective Presentations.

If you want people to understand what you say, be sure to pay attention to your other senses, especially sight.
If I said, "DON'T think of a duck", it is nearly impossible to NOT think of a duck because the human mind must first see the duck before it can process the command telling you not to see it. That's pretty cool.
In another twist, if you looked at a photo of a beach, with a caption that says "Think Snow" in big letters, your mind will actually have a hard time thinking about snow, even though it's clearly written.
Scientists took a deck of white cards with color names written on them, and timed how long people take to identify the colors written on them. They then compared it to the time it takes to go through the same number of cards, except this time they colored the cards to match the color names. Because the color names matched the card colors, they finished this deck faster than the white cards.
Then they used another colored card deck, except this time the card color didn't always match the words on the cards. Not only did this deck take the longest, but people often wrote down the wrong color.
The lesson here is that messages without a visual element are slower to understand than those with a visual element, and that when your visual elements conflict with your message, your message takes longer for people to absorb, and they stand a good chance of not understanding it.
Think about this next time you need to do a presentation.
When your slides lack visuals, or when your visuals don't fit, you risk losing your audience.
