Why I Use a USB Flash Drive As My Main Storage

A new way to think about Flash Drives.
Until a few years ago, I needed to bring my laptop with me whenever I went to see a client. At the time, this was the only practical way for me to have full access to my files in the field. Prior to that, it was even harder, because I had to bring backups of the files with me, then merge any changes and additions with the ones on my desktop computer. It was a real pain in the neck.
Thankfully, as USB Flash Drives got bigger and faster, I found an easier solution; I started using them as my PRIMARY STORAGE. This means that instead of using flash drives as a backup of my data, I use them as the main location of my files.
This means that at any given time, I have the newest version of all my important files right in my pocket. It also means that I can make changes or additions to those files, without having to remember to put them back on my desktop computer.
An even bigger advantage is that I can now use just about any computer in the world, and still have access to my files. All I have to do is plug it in when I start, and take it out when I leave.
Naturally you will need to back up the flash drive from time to time, so you don't have to worry about losing all your files. I back up my flash drive every couple of days, and that backup is automatically synced to several cloud services like iDrive, Dropbox, iCloud and OneDrive.
This is perfect for people who use more than one computer, such as at work or at home. Just be sure to take it with you.
One other warning. If you are concerned with losing your flash drive, you may also want to turn on some form of encryption, so that only you can access the files. Some flash drives come with encryption software and there are several options built-in to Windows and MacOS.
