Why doesn't Google have a Reseller Program for Gmail?
We all know people with horrible email addresses with all sorts of numbers at the end. I'm sure it wasn't their first choice. After all, who would select "MonkeyBuns7474505B@gmail.com" if they didn't try at least a few dozen other ones first.
The trouble is there are literally hundreds of million Gmail users out there, so it's become nearly impossible to register a good @gmail.com address that isn't already taken, without adding some numbers to the end.
The easy solution is for Google to offer addresses at other domains.
They already offer Gmail at other domains to corporate users using Google Apps, but those companies pay a monthly fee for each account. Because of this monthly fee, Google doesn't show advertising on these accounts.
For all other accounts, they earn money from advertising, which means there's an opportunity for people with cool domains to offer gmail functionality at a memorable and desirable domain.
Other companies already offer similar programs. For example, before Gmail.Com, a company used to run ads on the radio selling email accounts @beer.com. The commercials made it sound like a cool thing to do. The trouble is, as cool as it was, people weren't willing to pay for an address. Another company went out of their name to buy common last names, under the assumption that people with those last names would be willing to have their firstname @ their lastname (.com). The jury is out on that because for it to succeed, people have to be comfortable with the quality of the service itself.
With Gmail, people are already comfortable with the service. They know how it works, and above all, they know they can trust the spam and security features. So, if they offered the same functionality at other domains, people would trust it.
Naturally, Google would have to have complete control of the domain, to insure accounts are secure, so the domain owner would essentially be turning ownership of the domain over to Google, but earn a residual income from the accounts it attracts. The key is finding domains that people would actually want.
I'm a domain hoarder, so if they ever offered such a program, I'd jump at the opportunity.
