Big Companies Should Stop Making Junk.

General Electric makes life saving, multi-million dollar medical equipment. They also make $50 digital cameras.
Brand names are not what they used to be. I can remember when you could walk into a store and make a decision based on just the reputation of the brands. It didn't matter what you were buying. If you saw something made by Sony, chances are it was high quality.
Big companies no longer take pride in their brand name. Instead of being known as a company that makes the best products in a small number of categories, they manufacture thousands of products in every price range and category.
If you search for Sony products on Amazon, you get everything from a $8 pair of headphones, to a $10,000 TV. The same is true of Samsung, and GE. You get a mixture of truly high quality products... and junk. They make so much junk that you start to wonder which is which.
If you saw a Samsung or Sony camera for $75, would you think it was a great price?
That's the point. You have no way to know if it was a great price on a high quality item, or a piece of junk. If they only made high quality items, you would know for sure.
I'm sure they make all that junk because they want to provide products for people in every price range, but this destroys the reputation of their brand, and that eventually leads to people second guessing their high end products.
If they want to produce products in multiple price ranges, they should do what car makers do, create alternate brands for each price range. Every car maker has multiple brands that differentiate their price ranges. GM has brands like Chevy, Buick and Cadillac. Lexus does not make low priced cars; Scion doesn't make luxury cars, but they are all made by Toyota. They use different brands to insure you know what to expect.
This problem isn't limited to electronics companies. A lot of high end brand names now make lower quality items specifically to sell in outlet stores. Coach for example now slaps their brand on plastic iPhone cases. Pierre Cardin made the same mistake in the 70s, and now the brand is no longer associated with high end products.
