The Boston Red Sox. You Call THAT a NAME?

Who the heck came up with a name like that?

Although the names of sports teams can be a little strange, most teams spend at least some time coming up with a good name. Florida has the Marlins, Colorado has the Rockies, Houston has the Astros, but why the heck would you name your team after a pair of sox?

Sox? Red Sox? As strange as that is, Chicago has the White Sox. It's just plain strange.

God Bless America should be our National Anthem.

Whenever I hear The Star Spangled Banner, I can't help but compare it to God Bless America. They're both great songs, but as far as I'm concerned, God Bless America is simply... better.

God Bless America beats The Star Spangled Banner in every way possible. The words are are beautiful and easier to understand. Let's face it.
When people in other countries hear words like "bombs bursting in air", you know at least some of them will see that as aggression, especially since we're a military super power. They don't know the context of those words, and frankly, they confuse some American too.

Meanwhile, every word of God Bless America is simply beautiful and inspiring. Simply stated. It's a great song and it's a shame it is... [More]

Crowds at every other sport are loud and energetic.

One of the most remarkable things about tennis and golf is that although they both attract large crowds, you can hear a pin drop while the game is in play. Why is that?

I realize the players feel it's distracting, but you can just as easily say the same thing about just about every other sport, yet those players are actually energized by the sound of the crowd. In fact, it's very common to see a crowd not only boo and shout at baseball games, but they even wave objects specifically to distract the opposing pitcher, yet when somebody sneezes at a tennis match, everyone, including the players will stop what they're doing to try to find out who did it. If the sneezing continues, they'll probably ask you to leave.

Wouldn't it be great if everyone had the opportunity to watch pro sports in their own home town?

As a New Yorker, I'm surrounded by professional sports teams. We not only have teams in every major sport, we have two in each, the Yankees and the Mets, Jets and Giants, Nicks and Nets, Islanders and Rangers. Technically, the Jets and Giants play in New Jersey, but you get the point. But what about people in places like Las Vegas, Montana, Idaho, or Alaska? The fact is there are tons of places without access to any major league sports.

The fact that there are so many places without professional sports teams means that there are millions of fans who would jump at the opportunity to catch a live home game, if they had the chance.

That's the inspiration for today's idea. I th... [More]

Transgender Athletes in Pro Sports. Why Not?

Should transgender athletes be allowed to play professional sports?

With all the controversy over which restrooms transgendered people should be allowed to use, it begs the question... what else should they be allowed to do?

It's pretty black and white to me. They should be allowed to play in whatever sports they want, provided they make the team. In fact, I think women and men should be allowed to play in whatever leagues they want, provided they make the team. So if a transgendered man wants to play for the New York Yankees, he should be given the same opportunity as a naturally born man has, as long as he has the skills.

Why Have Gender Restrictions In Pro Sports?

Some of the best athletes in the world are women, yet they aren't permitted to play in the same leagues as men.

Although we can debate whether women (in general) are weaker than men, but there's no mistaking the fact that there are a lot of women who play on the same level as men. Unfortunately, just about every major league sport has gender restrictions, which is a shame.

One of the few exceptions is Danica Patrick, who's been competing along with with men in NASCAR and Indy Racing for more than a decade. Another exception is horse racing, where women such as Rosie Napravnik have even competed in all three races of the Triple Crown.

Other than horse and auto racing, women have no choice but to compete in leagues of their own, such as the WNBA, and LPGA, but what's really... [More]

Sports on TV isn't really live.

There's something special about seeing a sporting event as it actually happens. The funny thing is when you watch an event on TV, it's actually delayed about 10-30 seconds, so if you were on the phone with someone who was actually at the game, they can tell you what's going to happen before you see it on TV.

The primary reason for the delay is to give the broadcasters an opportunity to censor out any offensive language before it hits the airwaves. That few extra seconds makes a big difference when a sportscaster gets overly excited and accidentally curses on the air.

That said, there's no reason why they can't give people the opportunity to watch the video portion in real-time... as it happens, along with live crowd noises, then play the co... [More]

Whatever happened to sportsmanship?

I played Little League Baseball when I was young. I wasn't good at the game, but I learned something more important than baseball. I learned about Sportsmanship.

In Little League, after each game ends, both teams line up to shake hands. It's a great tradition, yet you seldom see this kind of sportsmanship in professional sports, and that's a shame. That one little gesture can bring out the best in both teams, assuming the handshake is genuine.

If boxers can spend 10 rounds beating each other senseless, and not only shake hands... but give each other a big hug when it's over, why can't baseball players shake hands?

It doesn't matter if it's a regular game, or a championship. Shaking hands after the game is a great way to let th... [More]

WWE Should Reinstate Hulk Hogan

LARGE-458

You can't erase the legacy of Hulk Hogan!

The WWE made a big mistake when they not only terminated his contract, but decided to erase his legacy from their history.

This is no small task.

Removing Hulk Hogan from web sites, video archives and other promotional products is nearly impossible without erasing the very DNA of the WWE itself. Hogan is, by far, the most recognizable wrestler in the history of the WWF & WWE. Even people who've never watched wrestling know who he is.

Simply stated, removing Hulk Hogan from the history of the WWE is not only unfair to Hulk Hogan, who played a huge role in the explosive growth of the WWE, but it's unfair to fans who have followed him for over 3 decades.

When Rowdy Roddy Piper passed away a few weeks ago, the WWE played clips o... [More]

Most people root for their home team. But what about towns without a local team?

Ted Turner coined the phrase "America's Team" for the Atlanta Braves. At first, I couldn't understand why. I'm a New Yorker, so as far as I was concerned, the New York Yankees had to be the most popular sports team in the country. Then I figured out why, and in a way, he was right.

Because every Atlanta Braves game was broadcast on his nationally syndicated channels, the Braves were the only team that anyone in the country could follow all season long, regardless of which city they were in. So, if you lived in a city like Las Vegas, that has no major league sports teams, there was a good chance you might follow the Braves.

Las Vegas isn't alone, there are a lot of of major cities without a... [More]

If you think hitting a tiny ball with a club, into a tiny hole 200 yards away is hard, try doing it without the club.

Golf isn't easy for me. The only consolation is that most people play just as bad as I do.

Every time I hit the ball, there's a 50 / 50 chance it won't go where I want it to. On the rare occasion where I get it to go more than 50 feet, it goes hundreds of feet to the left or right. Sometimes it just flops 3 feet ahead, followed by an embarrassing clump of turf that manages to go 20 feet. I'm pretty bad.

One day, I decided to just try throwing the ball. It sounds like cheating, but as it turns out, it's still pretty hard. Throwing the ball eliminates those embarrassing hooks, slices and flying clumps of turf, but unless you've got an arm like a big leag... [More]

Miniature Golf Tables

LARGE-369

Whoever invented Mini-Golf is a genius.

The great thing about Mini-Golf is that it scales down everything about the game, from the size of the field, the time it takes to play, and even the cost.

If they could shrink the game that much, why stop there? Why not make a Mini-Mini Golf game that's small enough to fit in your living room. About the size of a pool table.

Here's how you can not only use one table for 18 holes, but create an unlimited number of holes, traps and other obstacles that can be re-configured on-the-fly.

MIT calls this technology "Tangible Media", which basically is a series of re-positionable surfaces that can be moved up and down like pixels on a screen.

It's like a compute... [More]

Sports Should Include Men AND Women

LARGE-276

If some women are just as athletic as men, why not let them join men's teams?

This has bugged me for years. While it may be true that the average man is stronger than the average woman, I find it hard to believe that after over 100 years of professional sports, we still have rules that exclude women from playing alongside men.

Sports should be gender agnostic. If a woman can demonstrate the strength and skills needed to make the cut for a team, she should be able to play. It's that simple.

Given the chance, women who are top ranked in their respective sports leagues are at least as good, and probably better than a large percentage of men in pro sports.

It's even more important that young girls are given the chance to play and compete with young boys. I can't stre... [More]

Pete Rose Should Be In The Hall Of Fame!

LARGE-274

When you about baseball's all time greats, you can't overlook Pete Rose, unless you're talking to the people who run The Baseball Hall Of Fame.

He admitted to being a gambling addict, and even betting on baseball. Some may agree that banning him from actively playing or managing makes sense, because of the potential for throwing a game to win a bet. The fact is, he never bet AGAINST his own team, so to me, even the ban on actively participating was way too harsh.

Regardless of the ban on participating in the game, banning him from The Hall of Fame is just plain stupid!

Just look at his list of records (taken from his Wikipedia page)

Why Are There No Sportscaster Interventions?

LARGE-244

We get it. Umpires and referees are the final word. But what if they are clearly wrong?

When Instant Replay came along, Sportscasters and TV viewers suddenly had the power to not only get a second look at a controversial play, but see it played out in slow motion... from 6 different angles.

As technology improved, and the quality of the replays has improved, some sports now have rules that allow a team to request a video review. The trouble with the system is they created a ton of complicated rules that often result in a play not being reviewed.

Among other things, the coach has to request the review before the next snap, which sounds pretty simple, but if he does this every time he thinks there's a chance a bad call was made, he risks losing time on the clock if he's wr... [More]
