Idea Of The Day. A new Idea Each Day. Some Don't Suck.

We post an all new idea every day. If you find an idea you like... do something about it. Make it happen.

Personal Cloud vs Real Cloud Explained

Most people still don't "Get" the cloud.

In this video, I explain the differences, and why you really should focus on the real thing.

Here's a gadget I'd buy, if it existed. A USB connected drive that connects to DropBox in the background, so it's always updating, even when the computer is off.

As a bonus, you wouldn't need to install Dropbox software on your computer, so it won't use any resources.

The concept is simple, but I've yet to see a device that can pull this off. I've seen some NAS boxes that have a feature that lets you install plugins that include things like Dropbox, but they're way too complicated for most people to set up, and they have one big downside... Compared to a USB connected device, they're much slower.

What would be best is a USB or Thunderbolt based box that has fast transfers to and from the host computer, and also have a WiFi or Ethernet connection to sync with Dropbox in th... [More]

Install Windows From OneDrive (Cloud)

LARGE-554

There should be a way to install (or re-install) Windows from the cloud.

One of the my favorite things about the Mac is how you can install a brand new hard drive and install the entire system from the cloud. There's no need to find the original CDs, or even a USB drive. The firmware has everything it needs to download and install the entire operating system. All you need is an Internet connection. Why can't Windows do the same thing?

The concept is pretty simple. By adding simple networking to the firmware / BIOS of Windows PCs, even a system with a brand new hard drive should be able to connect to a server to download the Windows Installer that matches whichever version you use.

The main problem for Microsoft is financial. They want to be sure people download the

iCloud Support for Apple Time Capsule

LARGE-509

Just set it... and forget it.

Most people don't think about backups, until their computers eventually break down, then it's too late. That's why I love Apple's Time Capsule. It's the easiest backup system I've ever used. Once you set it up, it automatically creates hourly backups of every Mac in your house, so you'll never forget to make a backup. Since it's wireless, you can put it anywhere in your house and you won't even know it's there.

That's how all backups should be, automatic. If you need to be reminded to plug something in, chances are, you'll forget.

The only problem is that your Time Capsule, is in your house, so if your computer is damaged due to some kind of disaster, your backup is worthless. When Superstorm Sandy hit New York, several of my clients no... [More]

I hate looking for my receipts!

Today's inspiration came from two places, PetSmart, and Neat Receipts.

PetSmart recently started offering customers the option to get an emailed receipt. This is not only a way to save paper, but a great way to archive your receipts. It's pretty simple. Since they already have your email address, they send your receipt as a PDF.

Neat Receipts is a service that lets you scan your receipts into the cloud, then run reports you can use to track expenses.

Wouldn't it be great if you could access ALL of your receipts from every store you visit, without scanning?

There's room for a company like DropBox, or Neat Receipts to provide a service that lets merchants link their customer loyalty cards to a cloud... [More]

DropBox Box - A Local Backup With Cloud

LARGE-287

The cloud is wonderful, but it's still slow

The benefits of a cloud backup are crystal clear. You just back up your files to the cloud, and viola... all your important files are safely stored in the cloud. However, cloud backups take a long time to complete and the backup software ties up your computer too much. For some people, their first cloud backup takes months to complete. The result is your computer runs slower, and it needs to be on all the time.

Wouldn't it be easier if we just plugged in an external drive that has it's own Internet connection that backs up whatever is stored in it to the cloud?

The concept is very simple. When your computer is on, you use the external drive just like any other high speed backup device, however the device remains powere... [More]

Got backups?

Apple's Time Machine is the easiest backup system ever. Once you connect a storage device, it asks you if you want to use it for Time Machine. Answer yes, and it take over from there. That's it. That's why so many Mac owners use it.

Time Machine gives people peace of mind knowing they can easily restore any file they may lose, or even restore the entire system on a brand new Mac in a matter of minutes. The only trouble is, if you lost your data because of a flood, a fire or other disaster, your backup will likely be destroyed too.

Now that cloud storage is becoming more mainstream, I think it's time Apple expanded Time Machine to support cloud platforms. Since many people already have cloud storage accounts, they could easily store backups there, givin... [More]

Got backups?

LARGE-132

A few hours ago, my computer totally crashed... But I'm not freaking out.

As someone who's been in the computer business since the 70s, I get a lot of calls from people in a total panic. Most of them start with "My computer crashed. I lost everything!"

"Lost everything?"

"Yes... Everything."

"You don't have a backup?"

"No."

"I guess you're right. You lost everything."

Thankfully, as a tech guy, I've been able to salvage data from most of those situations, but the truth is, it's not always easy, and there is never a guarantee everything will be intact. Even if your computer isn't used to store important business files, most home computers have thousands of irreplaceable family photos and videos.

The bottom line, every computer will eventually break. E
