Idea Of The Day. A new Idea Each Day. Some Don't Suck.

Movies Shouldn't Use 555 Phone Numbers

Nothing breaks the spell of a movie more than a 555 phone number.

Great movies can take you away to another time and place, and for a little while, you think you're right there with the stars, until somebody in the movie mentions a phone number, and it starts with 555. What an uncreative way to give out a phone number and break the spell.

I just don't get it. By now, everyone knows that 555 is a fake phone number, so when I hear them use it in the middle of a movie, it immediately reminds me it's just a movie, no matter how realistic the movie is.

I realize they're just trying to avoid giving out somebody's real phone number, but there are so many other options that are more creative than 555. For example, why not use letters, like they used to do with old phone numbers.... [More]

Home Miniature Golf Table... Invention Idea

Here's my idea bringing the joy of Mini-Golf into your own home.

Great inventions often come from finding new ways to adapt existing technology to an all new purpose. That's how today's Idea of the Day came about.

We've all see 3D Impression Pin Boxes before. They're little toy boxes with thousands of little pins that slide back and forth taking the shape of whatever you put behind it. It dawned on me that if you made a box the size of a pool table, then created an automated way to set the position of the pins, it would be able to take the shape of all sorts of 3D surfaces... like an infinitely programmable miniature golf course!

Think about it, you could use your mobile phone to download and configure the table to make each hole unique, including virtual sand traps and... [More]

Live DJs on some Pandora Stations

LARGE-544

Radio without DJs?

One of the biggest reasons for the growing popularity of Internet and satellite radio is variety. For over 17 years, New York City didn't have a single country radio station. The same is true for a lot of music categories. Even though it's the largest radio market in the country, you'd have a hard time finding country, western, blues, big bands, 50's Rock & Roll and many other types of music unless you use satellite or Internet radio.

I started to listen to Pandora Internet Radio about 8 years ago, when they released their iPhone App, and I was immediately hooked because they have even more variety than SiriusXM Satellite Radio. That's because they have a nearly infinite number of "Stations", which are more like playlists lists of songs than a traditiona... [More]

WWE Should Reinstate Hulk Hogan

LARGE-458

You can't erase the legacy of Hulk Hogan!

The WWE made a big mistake when they not only terminated his contract, but decided to erase his legacy from their history.

This is no small task.

Removing Hulk Hogan from web sites, video archives and other promotional products is nearly impossible without erasing the very DNA of the WWE itself. Hogan is, by far, the most recognizable wrestler in the history of the WWF & WWE. Even people who've never watched wrestling know who he is.

Simply stated, removing Hulk Hogan from the history of the WWE is not only unfair to Hulk Hogan, who played a huge role in the explosive growth of the WWE, but it's unfair to fans who have followed him for over 3 decades.

When Rowdy Roddy Piper passed away a few weeks ago, the WWE played clips o... [More]

Streaming music is great. Live streaming music with a real disc jockey... is even better.

I've been streaming music for years, but there's something special about live radio that can never be captured by automated playlists.

Live programming is what's missing from Amazon Prime too... something that transforms the audience into a genuine community, who are all sharing the same experiences at the same time.

I'm sure a lot of surveys and studies show that there is a definite trend away from live programming in favor of automated programming and on-demand services, but deep down there is still a huge demand for live programming.

Without live programming, Disc Jockeys, and talk show hosts like Howard Stern, Sirius and XM radio never would've caught on.

Daily Talk Show. 7 Days... 7 Hosts!

LARGE-435

Why not create a daily show that's actually different each day?

A daily talk show that has a different host for each day of the week would be revolutionary. The show would run the same time every night, from the same set, and on the same network. While it would still be the same show, the diversity of the hosts would make each night entirely different, with it's own distinct energy and atmosphere.

Not only does it give the audience a break from the same host every single day, it gives the host an entire week to prepare for their next show.

It also has the potential to bring more diverse guests, because hosts tend to book guests that fit their unique personality, including a lot of the people they've worked with in the past.

By having 7 hosts, it has the potential... [More]

Netflix NOW... Prime Time Programming.

LARGE-434

On-demand services are wonderful, but schedule programming is an EVENT.

I realize that the whole point of Netflix is that the entire service is on-demand, so you can watch whatever you want, whenever you want. That's all fine and dandy, but I think they should have scheduled programming too.

When I was in grade school, Tuesdays were special; that's when Happy Days came on. The next day, everyone in class talked about it. Although none of us watched it together, Tuesdays at 8m belonged to us. It was an event we all shared together.

That's what's missing from on-demand services like Netflix, an event. Now that they have original programming, they need to schedule specific times for first run episodes to run, so everyone in the country can watch at the same time. They ca... [More]

Like many fans of the original TV show, I HATE the Tom Cruise movies.

Full disclosure. I've only seen one of the new Mission: Impossible movies. That's the point.

As somebody who grew up watching the original Mission: Impossible TV series, I was thrilled when I heard about the 1996 movie version staring Tom Cruise. As I watched the movie, my enthusiasm for the movie turned to hate. True hate. It was sickening.

Unlike most movie adaptations, Tom Cruise decided it would be a good idea to have none of the original characters, and make the original hero of the show into the villain. What a jackass.

Fans of the original TV show remember Peter Graves as Jim Phelps, the leader of an elite team of covert government agents who take on all sorts of bad guys. In every e... [More]

Wouldn't it be great if there were clubs where everyone wears a Bluetooth headset?

Like a lot of my ideas, this one will sound a little strange at first, so stick with me.

Here's how it would work. You walk into a club, and they hand you a Bluetooth headset. The room is pretty quiet, but there are about a hundred people dancing, so you put the headset on and adjust the volume and start dancing.

An hour later, you see a friend you haven't seen in a while, so you both turn down the volume and find a table and talk about the old days. Unlike traditional clubs, this is the first time you can actually have a conversation.

At some point in the conversation, you mention to your friend you love this club because you love country music, at which point your friend reminds you

Rodney Dangerfield died 10 years ago today.

It seems like only yesterday, but on October 5th, 2004, Rodney Dangerfield passed away. It's hard to believe it's been that long ago, but I couldn't resist reflecting on his legacy in my thoughts for today.

What stands out most about Rodney Dangerfield was that he was different. Before Rodney came along, most comedians told jokes about other people, whether real or imaginary.

Rodney's jokes were about himself.

Because of Rodney, we learned three life lessons.

1. Joking about other people can hurt their feelings... so DON'T Do it. Poke fun of yourself instead.

2. When you laugh at yourself, people laugh with you... not at you.

Much has been written about Rodney but what stood out most was that most o... [More]

Today I was thinking about Fred Rogers, and how special Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood was.

More than anything, I was thinking about how so many of today's children will never know who he was. That's sad.

There are countless shows geared at children today, including some very high quality shows, but there's a big hole in children's television where Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood once stood.

So many of today's children's shows are the product of two distinct factories of thought... entertainment or purely academic education. These shows are formulated and tested by focus groups that end up producing a highly polished, but watered down message. Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that children have a lot more diversity of characters, and they gain as much watching TV as they would in... [More]
